Let's talk strategies and supports for kids who ar Let's talk strategies and supports for kids who are failing. Research has shown that just keeping kids back doesn't lead to any better outcomes.⁣
⁣
Now, I know it's early on in the school year to be talking about keeping kids back. But I mention it now because I feel like the time to have these conversations is now (not months from now when a student is failing and getting a letter sent home).⁣
⁣
Also, I'm not in any way saying we should just push kids forward without changing things. That certainly doesn't fix anything either.⁣
⁣
But usually there is a middle ground. There are interventions and supports we can put in place. I believe struggling kids need more supports. I believe classroom teachers with struggling kids need more supports too.⁣
⁣
And the responsibility shouldn't all fall on classroom teachers.⁣
⁣
I plan to write an article on this, but I'd love to open it up for discussion.⁣
⁣
What strategies and interventions do you use for kids who are failing or at risk for failing?

Involving kids in their plans and interventions he Involving kids in their plans and interventions helps them feel invested. It helps them feel like they have a voice, and that's really important.⁣
⁣
A few ways to involve kids:⁣
⁣
- Conference with them. Talk to them about what works and doesn't work for whatever challenge they're working through.⁣
⁣
- Invite them to their IEP meetings. At the very least, have them come to the last 5-10 minutes to review the plan and ask for their feedback before closing out.⁣
⁣
- Invite them to their parent conferences if possible. If not, a phone conference with families and child may work too.⁣
⁣
- Hold weekly check-ins about their intervention plans. Ask them: What's working? What could be better? Problem-solve together.
A daily emotions check-in is one of my top simple A daily emotions check-in is one of my top simple and effective way to integrate social-emotional learning. This page here is actually a freebie!⁣

Emotions check-ins build self-awareness and help kids work through their emotions, instead of attempting to ignore them.⁣
