Let's make it okay for educators to speak up, shar Let's make it okay for educators to speak up, share concerns, and offer different ways of doing things. Not everyone has to agree with those suggestions or ideas, but it should at least be accepted to offer them and talk them through.

I know these aren't cheerful reminders but I do think they're important ones.⁣
⁣
Some people truly struggle with the holiday season (I think more people than we realize). And many kids struggle too.⁣
⁣

A calm down area (whether it's in the classroom or A calm down area (whether it's in the classroom or in another room) is not an "easy way out of work." I know it feels that way sometimes (been there). ⁣
⁣
The idea behind it is actually much bigger.⁣
⁣
The idea is to help kids learn strategies for self-regulation. Sometimes, if we're upset or overwhelmed to the point where we can make poor choices, we need to remove ourselves and calm down in the moment.⁣
⁣
This is a GOOD thing to teach kids and teens to do.⁣
⁣
It can be tricky because some students may try to take advantage and go to the calm down area to avoid their work (instead of when they actually need it). ⁣
⁣
I found that setting routines and guidelines for the calm down area did help. One of those expectations is that work missed was to be made up.⁣
⁣
