❤️ In most cases, kids aren't going to politely te ❤️ In most cases, kids aren't going to politely tell someone they're struggling with big emotions.

They might, however, act out in ways that come across as challenging to us.

They might refuse to start their assignment, hide under their desk, raise their voice, do things to make others laugh, or just shut down.

This doesn't mean those behaviors are acceptable for their classroom. They're not.

But recognizing that challenging behaviors are often a clue into the bigger picture is incredibly powerful.

So, what can busy educators do?

We can keep building relationships slowly day after day. We can find out what makes each kid smile. We can teach appropriate social skills. We can practice and reinforce classroom routines. We can check in. We can listen to what a child has going on. We can care. We can practice healthy coping skills with ALL learners (because we all need those skills anyway).

And also, we can be kind to ourselves in these challenging times. All educators have a lot on their plates at the moment. Please know you are doing an amazing job.

It's not necessarily an overnight or easy fix (it never is), but we can make baby steps together. That's where the real change happens.
